Terrorism and the Real Issues – Dr Mahathir

Being someone very interested in the history of her own country Malaysia, I am naturally attracted to any book that I can find in the local libraries that are written by Malaysian figures. So it is not difficult to understand why I had picked this book up from the shelves, considering that Dr Mahathir is no small Malaysian.
The book is a collection of speeches that Dr M made on the issue of terrorism while he was still Prime Minister. Interestingly, there is one speech which was made (that is collected in this book) before the September 11 attacks. In that speech, he mentioned that terrorism is not an alien concept as far as humanity was concerned, terrorism having existed since the beginning of time.
All the other speeches were made in meetings that were held after the 9/11 attacks. Naturally, these were more to the point, as there was a common threat that everyone acknowledged. He made it very clear that terrorism is not encouraged in Islam, and that those who resort to acts of terrorism in the name of Islam do so irresponsibly.
This being a collection of speeches, there is not much that I can say. Dr M is a man who has the respect of many in my country, myself being one of them. Though he may not have been the greatest Prime Minister, he was a man who knew what he was doing. The general similarity in all the speeches collected here show how single minded this man can be.
Conclusion: My being interested in issues like these has made this an easy read. I have no doubt, however, that if I were to have had the privilege to be there when he was making those speeches, I would have enjoyed it a lot more, since Dr M can be quite the speaker.
